It’s always dangerous to make a
sweeping generalization about just
about anything, but especially dangerous to make one about an entire
generation. But that’s precisely what
I’m about to do. (And at 42, I’m
right smack in the middle of Gen X,
so make whatever assumptions you
wish about me and my 60 million
fellow forty-somethings.)
Here goes: The Millennials or Generation Y—those born in
the 1980s and 1990s—are, without a doubt, the hardest-work-ing, most tech-savvy and information-hungry overachievers. In
fact, when we set out to identify The Rising Stars of the Profession—those under the age of 35—we thought we’d be highlighting consultants who were poised to change the industry. Boy,
were we wrong. It didn’t take long to realize that this group was
already changing the profession in profound ways, some we had
never envisioned.
What did we learn? Well,
they’re eager and well educated. They know what they want,
and are not about to settle. They
don’t like the status quo; in fact,
they will—quite enthusiastically—challenge it for forever and a
day. They are not afraid to take chances. They expect their jobs
to be fulfilling. They expect to be fulfilled. If they’re not, they’ll
move on. The “work hard, play hard” mantra was practically
invented for them. They are philanthropic; they believe the work
they do each day should lead to more than a paycheck. In some
cases, much more. They are determined.
In simplest terms, they want to change the world—or at least
leave it in much better shape than how they found it. They are,
in a word, redefining the consulting profession.
Are these generalizations? You bet they are, but they are
based on facts and real examples culled from the hundreds of
nominations we reviewed for just 35 awards. I challenge you
to think differently after you spend some time reading about
the winners in this special 22-page section. I promise you’ll
come away impressed.
